Justice Forums – February 27 and March 6

Christ Church Cathedral Vancouver presents a new series called The Justice Forums, based on the success of the 40 Minute Forums. The Justice Forums are meant to raise awareness of issues of social justice concern, an integral component of the proclamation of the gospel.  Speakers will include dynamic individuals working in community, non-profit and activist organizations – a.k.a. the Social Prophet sector.  As a part of our discipleship formation process, these speakers will help us discern and to engage with like-minded organizations working on poverty and homelessness, aboriginal issues, ecological concerns, etc.  The Forums begin at 9:15AM in the Park Room on select Sundays.

February 27 – “The Legacy of the Indian Residential Schools” with Angela White.

Our first Justice Forum is on Sunday February 27, 9:15-10:00AM.  Guest speaker Angela White will speak on “The Legacy of the Indian Residential Schools.”  Angela describes herself in this way, “I am from Snuneymuxw Nation on Vancouver Island. I have three children who are 20, 18 and 14. I currently work for the Indian Residential School Survivors Society, but have worked for First Nations for the past 20 years. I began my BA with Malaspina College/University (currently Vancouver Island University), and completed my education at the University of Winnipeg.” Everyone is invited to hear what Angela has to share with the Cathedral community.

March 6 Justice Forum – “The Demise of Refugee Protection in Canada” with Naomi Minwalla

The second Justice Forum is on Sunday March 6, 9:15-10:00AM.  Our second guest speaker is Naomi Minwalla, one of British Columbia’s leading refugee lawyers, and someone who has lived in and worked in overseas refugee camps herself.  The presentation she has prepared for the Cathedral community is called “The Demise of Refugee Protection in Canada,” and anyone interested in the intersection of faith and open community is invited to this exciting and engaging forum.
