Happy Epiphany everyone! This feast, as we all likely know, celebrates the visit of the Wise Men to the Christ Child in Bethlehem. It’s in many ways a sweet story, barely foreshadowing the horror of the murder by Herod of the children in the next few verses.

The last time I preached on our Gospel reading, some 6 years ago, I spoke about how amazing a man Joseph must have been. He lived in a time and place where a man’s honour was paramount, and to discover that his betrothed was pregnant, by someone else, he would have been entirely within his rights to walk away.
