Forty Minute Forum – February 5, 2012
A chance to engage with intelligent and articulate people who have something entertaining, stimulating or challenging to say to Cathedral parishioners and friends. Our diverse speakers are from: the arts, including drama, writing, television, film; government and politics; religion; education; not-for-profit organizations; etc. Free admission, free beverages. Topic: A New Paradigm for Aid in Africa
Partners in the Horn of Africa brings a new model of aid to Ethiopia and to non governmental organizations. One which characterizes Africans as ‘partners’ rather than beneficiaries and requires them to contribute to and make major decisions on all projects. The model also funds all administrative costs without using donations.
To date Partners has completed 265 projects in Ethiopia in the fields of education, micro finance, HIV/AIDS, reforestation and clean water,working among some of the poorest people in the world.
Founder and Executive Director of Partners in the Horn of Africa, a BC based charity that works exclusively in Ethiopia. Lawyer by profession in the field of labour law and constitutional law and senior partner in Baigent, Jackson, Blair, Lawyers. Among the first group of CUSO (Canadian University Services Overseas) volunteers to Africa in the mid-sixties. Subsequently, director of CUSO’s West Africa programme prior to attending Dalhousie and Harvard Law Schools.
