Email Newsletter – First Sunday in Lent |
|
Greetings!
 |
| The Reverend Chris Dierkes |
This weeks marks the beginning of the holy season of Lent.
On Tuesday night I celebrated with some of the young adults in our congregation, the great tradition of Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner, the last night of celebration before the fastings of Lent. On Tuesday The Cathedral also remembered the life of Russ Harding. In true Mardi Gras fashion, the culmination of Tuesday’s memorial was a Dixieland Jazz band (with Marcus Mosley on vocals) blasting ‘When the Saints Go Marchin’ In’ as we deposited Russ’ ashes in the Memorial Garden.
That experience was a sad and sweet entry into Ash Wednesday:
“Remember you are formed of dust and to the dust you shall return.”
As the Lenten instructions in the liturgy for Ash Wednesday state: “Lent is a time to prepare for the Easter celebration.” So for those who are giving up various things or taking on certain practices for Lent, remember that the reason for doing so is in order to make room in our hearts to more deeply enter into and celebrate the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus. Emphasis on the word celebrate.
To that end, the Cathedral Clergy will be offering a Tuesday night course on the 7 Deadly Sins. Also our Cathedral Home Group ministry launches this week upcoming. There are still spots available for both offerings. I commend these offerings as a helpful means to prepare for the time of Easter celebration.
Prayers and blessings for holy Lent to you all. The Reverend Chris Dierkes Curate, Christ Church Cathedral |

Home Groups!
You’re invited to participate in this new ministry in Lent
What Are Home Groups? Home groups are gath- erings of 8-12 people meeting during the week in a home to pray together, reflect on scripture, care for one another and to seek to ground faith in daily existence.
Over the past two months a team of people have been preparing to help facilitate these groups. They are not experts, but fellow parishioners, who will study and learn with you.
When: Groups begin the week of March 13 and will run to early June.

Catechism: A New Course
Sundays March 13 – April 10
9:15AM in the Park Room
For adults seeking baptism or reaffirmation of their baptismal vows at the Easter Vigil in 2011. Catechism is an ancient form of Christian teaching, and over 5 weeks we will seek to revise and re-imagine this practice for our own day.
Why? 2011 is a Year of Spiritual Renewal at the Cathedral. Examine with us the theology of The Holy Spirit, the place of confirmation and re-affirmation in the Christian way, and in particular the forming of a rule of life.
Register in the Parish Office. Attendance at 4 out of 5 sessions required.
