Email Newsletter – Feast of St.Luke the Physician

Greetings!
Ellen Clark-King
Ellen Clark-King

One of the most satisfying moments in life comes when you discover what your true vocation is – what job, career or activity allows your gifts to best meet the needs of the world. Some people are lucky enough to have this moment early on in their working lives, for others it doesn’t happen for years. My best friend had worked ever since graduation in the field of PR and advertising and found it increasingly ill-suited to her deepest sense of who she was. In her 40′s she took a massive leap of faith, sold her apartment and went back to school to train as a doctor. Her training was demanding, and her current work is challenging and sometimes exhausting, but she is also finding great happiness in doing work she loves and excels at.

This Sunday at the cathedral we are celebrating the feast day of St Luke the Physician, and also celebrating all those in our community who have found their vocation within the world of healing. For some this is in their profession as doctors, nurses, therapists, counsellors, lab techs, dentists, etc. For others it is through their volunteer work in healing prayer or healing touch ministries. We will ask God’s blessing on all who work to bring health and wholeness of body and mind to their fellow human beings. You are very welcome to join us – or to invite any friends who work in these areas to be part of the service.

Vocations, of course, do not always need to be in medical or religious fields – or fulfilled through our employment. There are people who would find fun and fulfilment in PR work while others live out their creative lives in building loving family relationships or finding a vocation as true friends. Whenever we celebrate a particular calling at the cathedral we can also celebrate the fact that all of us are called by God to share our unique giftedness with the world and to find joy and fulfilment as we do so.

Sincerely,

Ellen Clark-King
