Rabbinic Scholar in Residence – Robert Daum
Christ Church Cathedral, in partnership with the Iona Pacific Inter-religious Centre at VST, is pleased to announce the one year appointment of Rabbi Dr. Robert Daum as Rabbinic Scholar in Residence at Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver, BC (May 2010-May 2011).
As Rabbinic Scholar in Residence Dr. Daum will teach from his tradition; the Cathedral community respects the integrity of his tradition and counts his presence in the congregation as a teacher and consultant to be a blessing from the one God our traditions have known in different and in similar ways.

- Completion of an intensive certificate program in the summer of 2010 — “Expressions of Diversity: An Introduction to Muslim Cultures,” of the Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures, offered at SFU by Simon Fraser University and Aga Khan University (July 19 – 30, 2010);
Forthcoming Publications:
- A chapter, “Recalling the Nation’s Terrain: Narrative, Territory, and Canon,” in a volume that he has co-edited, The Calling of the Nations: Exegesis, Ethnography, and Empire in a Biblical-Historic Present (Mark Vessey, Harry O. Maier, Sharon V. Betcher, Robert Daum, eds.; University of Toronto Press, December, 2010);
- An article on form and content in a talmudic poem — appearing in the Jewish Quarterly Review, the oldest English language academic journal of Jewish studies in the world, which is published by the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.

Quest University in Squamish, Har-El Synagogue in West Vancouver, St. Mary’s Kerrisdale, Canadian Memorial United Church, St. Mark’s College’s “Theology on Tap” series; a fourth annual lecture in the Arts One program at UBC on Genesis; a second annual lecture on law and culture in the introductory course of the undergraduate Law & Society Minor at UBC; co-teaching a new course at SFU’s Wosk Centre (co-sponsored between SFU and Iona Pacific) next fall (2011); an invitation (accepted) to deliver an academic paper at a conference on “the reinvention of tradition” in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, to be held early this winter at Universidad Pablo Olavide in Spain with the sponsorship of a foundation established by the Kingdom of Morocco and the Government of Andalusia for the purpose of promoting peace and friendship among the peoples of the Mediterranean.
New Developments at Iona Pacific:
- Reappointment of Aliya Hirji, now Senior Intern;
- Appointment of Rosa Sevy, PhD (Sociology, UBC) as the first Iona Pacific Postdoctoral Fellow, a specialist in the therapeutic benefits of bearing pubic witness to communal trauma;
- A comprehensive new initiative for multi-faceted outreach to refugees;
- Year two for our dynamic Iona Pacific Youth team, currently led by seven Christians, Muslims, and Jews from the UBC Campus, focusing on inter-religious poverty initiatives, the arts as a way to bridge religious communities, and leadership development;
- Inter-religious dialogues, including women’s dialogue groups;
- A health and wellness initiative;
- Inter-religious initiatives in micro-credit and micro-development;
- Iona Pacific is now a practicum placement site for two students from the Adler School of Professional Psychology, one in the M.A. in Counselling Psychology program, the other in the M.A. in Organizational Psychology program;
- New degree programs in Indigenous and Inter-religious Studies in cooperation with VST and First Nations partners;
- A new course taught by Dr. Daum on sacred texts in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam;
- A new course co-taught by Prof. Harry Maier and Dr. Daum on how early Christians and rabbinic Jews responded to life under the Roman Empire (100 – 325 C.E.);
- A new course on Pedagogies of Pain offered downtown by Prof. Sharon Betcher, which includes two public events (one a Tonglen yoga healing retreat, the other a Jewish-Muslim-Christian trialogue (on the Job character, the Coen Brothers film “A Serious Man,” and approaches to suffering in the three monotheistic faiths);
- A new semi-annual Iona Pacific newsletter appearing in November;
- Co-sponsoring the Interfaith Amigos event at Christ Church Cathedral in November.
